The actors were never told in advance what was in store for their characters. Each new episode was just as much a surprise for them as it was for the viewers.
故事的背景設定在公元2257年，人類已經突破光速，開始大規(guī)模星際旅行及在太陽系附近殖民，與多個外星文明接觸并有貿易聯系。一天，一艘地球聯邦的星際驅逐艦在探索未知星際空間的時候遇到一艘不明星船，因為誤判對方意圖而先敵開火。對方叫明巴利外星族（Minbari），比人類早進化發(fā)展幾千年，其技術人類無法望其項背。不巧的是地球星船孤注一擲先敵開火的時候把灰色議會議長杜哈的給干掉了（那位老兄其實知道按大設計藍圖，明巴利必須與地球人聯合并融合，這次到這里也不是閑逛，而是準備與地球人第一次親密接觸）。于是明巴利對地球開戰(zhàn)，摧枯拉朽所向披糜，在對地球本土最后一擊的過程中，明巴利卻突然停止進攻并宣布投降?？傊?zhàn)后地球出資在中立空間建設“巴比倫空間站"，致力星際交流、談判及和平合作。前面四座都被摧毀或莫名其妙消失，于是有了巴比倫5號。巴5軍頭Sheridan和明巴利大使笛嵐（Delenn）帶領眾嘍羅，聯合火星殖民地抵抗力量反對地球聯邦通過謀殺政變而上臺的獨裁總統(tǒng)，聯合各外星文明反擊神秘黑暗種類——影族（Shadows），向佛隆人（Vorlon）說不，最終走上獨立自主自力更生的發(fā)展文明道路。
